The lands of Ribacoa have had a rich human presence since prehistory.
The origins of the castle of Sabugal are found in the kingdom of Leão when Afonso IX held the lands of Ribacoa.
In the 12th and 13th centuries, the village was the main location in this vast region.
D. Dinis, through the Alcanizes treaty, of 1297, got the lands on the right bank of the Côa, to ensure the defense of Sabugal.
There is still a part of the Leonese wall that surrounded the medieval village, with several houses that still display their traditional characteristics.

Legend has it that it was right here, in the square of the castle, that the miracle of the roses happened.
"The wife of D. Dinis, Queen Santa Isabel, became famous for her immense kindness. She occupied her time doing good to those around her, visiting and treating the sick, distributing alms to the poor.
Now, legend has it that the king, already irritated that she was always mixed up with beggars, forbade her to give more alms. But one day, seeing her sneak out of the palace, he went after her and asked what was hidden under her cloak.
It was bread. But she, distressed at having disobeyed the king, exclaimed:
They're roses, Lord!
"Roses, in January?" he doubted.
With her eyes downcast, Queen Santa Isabel opened her lap - and the bread had turned into roses, as beautiful as anyone has ever seen"

Pentagonal keep 28 meters high.
The high quality of the beef produced here also influences the local cuisine.
Local products gave rise to its own cuisine, trout, goat and game dishes, cheeses and chestnuts, among others.

Praia fluvial da Devesa, área de lazer na margem direita do rio Côa.
As terras de Ribacôa tiveram uma rica presença humana desde a pré-história.
As origens do castelo de Sabugal encontram-se no reino de Leão quando Afonso IX detinha as terras de Ribacôa.
Nos séculos XII e XIII, a vila era a principal localidade desta vasta região.
D. Dinis, pelo tratado de Alcanizes, de 1297, ficou com as terras da margem direita do Côa, para assegurar a defesa do Sabugal.
Ainda subsiste uma parte da muralha Leonesa que rodeava a vila medieval, com diversas casas que exibem ainda as suas características tradicionais.

Reza a lenda que foi aqui mesmo, no largo do castelo, que aconteceu a milagre das rosas.
"A mulher de D. Dinis, a rainha Santa Isabel, tornou-se célebre pela sua imensa bondade. Ocupava o tempo a fazer bem a quantos a rodeavam, visitando e tratando doentes, distribuindo esmolas pelos pobres.
Ora, conta a lenda que o rei, já irritado por ela andar sempre misturada com mendigos, a proibiu de dar mais esmolas. Mas, certo dia, vendo-a sair furtivamente do palácio, foi atrás dela e perguntou o que levava escondido por baixo do manto.
Era pão. Mas ela, aflita por ter desobedecido ao rei, exclamou:
São rosas, Senhor!
Rosas, em Janeiro?- duvidou ele.
De olhos baixos, a rainha Santa Isabel abriu o regaço - e o pão tinha-se transformado em rosas, tão lindas como jamais se viu"

Torre de menagem pentagonal com 28 metros de altura.
A elevada qualidade da carne de bovino que aqui se produz influencia também a gastronomia local.
Os produtos locais deram origem a uma gastronomia própria, a truta, o cabrito e os pratos de caça, os queijos e a castanha, entre outros.
