To keep ticks out of your yard, you need to know what’s attracting them. Check out five things in your yard that can attract ticks.
1. Tall Grass & Yard Debris
Ticks are drawn to environments with shade and protection. Tall grass and yard debris can act as shelter. Keep your grass cut short and remove leaves, weeds, twigs, grass clippings, and other yard debris.
2. Shrubs & Groundcover Plants
Vegetation can also be attractive to ticks. These pests hide in low-hanging shrubs and groundcover plants. Overwatering your plants leaves the soil wet, creating a damp environment that ticks prefer.
3. Animal Feeders
Animal or bird feeders can be a nice addition to your yard, but they can also cause ticks to show up. The birds and wildlife attracted to the feeders could be carrying ticks. It’s best to place feeders away from areas you tend to spend time.
4. Woodpiles
Ticks are also attracted to woodpiles because they provide shelter from the sun. If you have woodpiles, place them off the ground, away from your house, and in areas that receive sunlight to keep them dry.
5. Water
Excess moisture in your yard can cause ticks to show up. Avoid overwatering your plants, and empty and remove items that collect water. If possible, cut back tree branches to allow more sunlight into your yard.
