HISTORY: ROOTS & PRECURSORS
1. The Founders (1960s – 1980s)
The first attempts to fuse folklore and electronics emerged in the Soviet experimental scene.
Volodymyr Ivasiuk – a legendary composer who in the 1970s infused pop songs (“Chervona Ruta”) with modern arrangements, which was surprisingly progressive for the time.
Sofia Rotaru – her early works with electronic elements paved the way.
Soviet film soundtracks – often used synthesizers (ANS, Polivoks) with hints of folk motifs, creating a unique "cosmic folk" atmosphere.
2. Genre Formation (1990s – Early 2000s)
After independence, the first wave of experimentation began.
DakhaBrakha (founded 2004) – A REVOLUTION. They didn't create pure electronics, but their deconstruction of folklore, minimalist percussion, and elaborate vocal techniques ("ethno-chaos") became the cornerstone for all who followed.
Folk revival bands (“Bozhychi”, “Volodymyr”) – revived authentic singing and instruments, preparing the material for future remixes.
PRESENT DAY: BLOSSOMING & GLOBAL IMPACT (2014 – NOW)
1. First Modern Wave (Post-2014)
Maidan and the war in the east became a catalyst. Music became a way to express identity and resilience.
ONUKA (2014) – A BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT. Natałia Zhyzhchenko (former member of DakhaBrakha) combined folk instruments (sopilka, bandura) with techno and electro beats. Her video for “Vidlik” has over 20 million views.
Latexfauna – a project experimenting with electronic processing of folk instruments into ambient and trip-hop structures.
The Kharkiv electronic scene – the city became a hub for experiments (“kotlovyna”).
2. The "ЩЕ" Project (“Shche” – “Still/Yet”) – The Symbol of the Present
The most important collective today. Founded in 2017, it is a platform, studio, and musical manifesto.
Mission: To preserve authentic folk recordings (field recordings of old singers) and project them into modern electronic forms.
Method: They take archival samples and collaborate with modern producers to create tracks at the intersection of deep house, techno, and ambient.
Significance: It’s not just music; it’s an anthropological and technological project – a digital vault for cultural memory.
3. Key Figures of Today (2020 – Present)
Олег Бондаренко (Bonako) – A central figure. His albums (“Vesna”, “Lis”) are genre benchmarks: ambient backgrounds, subtle beats, clear folk vocals, and authentic instruments.
Наталія Дробот (Natalia Drobot) – A singer with a magnificent voice who collaborates with electronic producers.
Makovyči (Makovichy) – A group creating atmospheric folktronica with hypnotic repetitions.
Stas Koroliov – A producer working with archival recordings for the "ЩЕ" project.
Kozak System – More folk-rock, but their electronic experiments are significant.
4. Sonic Characteristics of the Contemporary Style:
Minimalism: Space, silence, simple repeating beats.
Vocals: “Bilyi holos” (white voice) – a clear, open, vibrato-less style. Often female, ethereal.
Instruments: Sopilka (flute), trembita (Alpine horn), bandura (zither), duda (bagpipes), dvozvuchá viola (a type of fiddle).
Production: Clean, modern, but with "warmth". Frequent use of field recordings (nature sounds, water, bells).
Themes: The land (fields, rivers, forests), ancestral memory, cycles of nature, resilience, longing for peace. Not directly about war, but about the context in which life and beauty persist.
FUTURE & SIGNIFICANCE
Cultural Self-Definition: It is a tool for the modern Ukrainian to be proud of their roots while living in the 21st century.
Global Reach: This music finds resonance WORLDWIDE due to its authenticity and emotional depth. International labels are taking notice.
