Latin Grammy honoree Mana reveals new album and world tour, talks US politics

Drummer Alex Gonzalez seemed truly humbled following a star-studded ceremony celebrating his Mexican rock band Mana being named Person of he Year, the highest honor bestowed by the Latin Recording Academy.
"We're very happy to be here," Gonzales said from Las Vegas Wednesday night (14 NOV. 2018.) "I mean, it's the first time this award has been given to a band. So, for us, it's a huge privilege and a tremendous honor."
Gonzalez announced Mana would embark on a world tour and "there's also new material on the way. So, 2019 is already looking pretty awesome."
Mana vocalist/guitarist Fher Olvera discussed his recent visit and show of support for the Central American migrants in a caravan headed to the US.
"I went with them, because they are in Guadalajara, Mexico, the caravan," he explained. And I saw faces with a lot of hope, and, also, so tired. I saw kids, children -- babies, even. So, we just went to give a big hug and say, 'OK, go.' We takes some tacos and frijoles for them. We still care about everything about them."
Among those showing support for Mana was Puerto Rican musician Draco Rose, a Latin Songwriter Hall of Famer, who has been battling cancer on and off since 2011, but said he was doing well now.
La Santa Cecilia percussionist Miguel 'Oso' Ramirez discussed the recent US midterm elections.
"Man, there's so much progress to be made. But I think we do have to celebrate all the small victories we've made locally, especially in like Los Angeles County for us, at the state level, at the national level. There was a bunch of amazing women that got nominated to a bunch of different positions. So, you know, we have to celebrate those victories, but, at the same time, keep working. There's a lot of work for us to do, and continue to do raise awareness and to support every kind of cause that we can."
The 2018 Latin Grammy Awards is set for Thursday night in Las Vegas.
