Recorded in 1949 as “Jealous Lover” and featured in that year’s British film “The Romantic Age,” this Charles Williams piece was resurrected (and renamed) in 1960 as the theme for Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning comedy-drama starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. Piano duo Ferrante & Teicher enjoyed their first major success with the recording “Theme From The Apartment,” arranged by Don Costa to resemble the original Williams version (listen here: • 1960 HITS ARCHIVE: Theme From The Apartmen... )
Well-known in England from the 1930s to 1960s as the prolific writer and conductor of light music for movies, radio, and TV, Williams’ two most recognizable compositions were “Jealous Lover” and “Dream Of Olwen.”
The original 78rpm single was issued on (British) Columbia D.X. 1569 - Jealous Lover (Williams) by Charles Williams and his Concert Orchestra, Arthur Dulay solo pianist, recorded April 12, 1949
