There was just a letter. An address. A set of instructions printed on paper that felt heavier than it should, in a font he didn't recognize. Report by the 14th. Bring enough for six months. Leave the phone.

He left the phone.

That was - a while ago. The desert has a way of dissolving time that he's stopped fighting. The massive dish rotates on a schedule he didn't program and can't override. Every morning the terminal is ready. Every morning he logs what the equipment finds: frequencies, durations, patterns he's learned to recognize without ever truly understanding. He formats it exactly the way the manual says. Uploads it. Waits.

The confirmation ping comes. It always comes. In eleven seconds, exactly.
He's never received anything else.

Once, he typed a question into the terminal. Just one. Who is this for?

The screen went dark for a long time. Long enough that he thought he'd broken something, violated some unwritten rule hidden between the lines of a manual he'd memorized but never truly comprehended.

Then the ping came.
Eleven seconds.
It wasn't an answer. It was just a receipt. He didn't ask again.

Some nights the dish moves when it's not supposed to. Slow, private arcs. Not tracking, just turning. Like a massive metal creature stretching in its sleep. He logs it. He logs everything. That's what he's here for.

He thinks.

The light in the Airstream stays on all night. He sits in front of the monitor, staring at the green pulse of the terminal. He wonders if his logs are feeding a dying command center on the other side of a broken world, an artificial intelligence abandoned decades ago, or something drifting between the stars, waiting for his next transmission.

He doesn't know who is on the other end of the line.
He only knows that at exactly eleven o'clock, the next log is due.
And someone - or something - is counting the seconds.
