Riddle of Steel / Riders of Doom is the iconic second track from the original motion picture soundtrack (OST) for the 1982 fantasy epic Conan the Barbarian, composed by Basil Poledouris.
This piece, clocking in at about 5:37–5:41 minutes, masterfully blends two sections: the contemplative "Riddle of Steel" (with its haunting oboe melody over string arpeggios representing Conan's philosophical journey and the film's central theme—"What is steel compared to the flesh?"—as pondered by the villain Thulsa Doom) and the ferocious "Riders of Doom" (a thunderous brass fanfare and Latin choral onslaught depicting Thulsa Doom's savage raiders pillaging Conan's village).
The track features a full orchestra, powerful brass, and a male choir chanting pseudo-Latin lyrics like "Enses, enses requirimus" ("Swords, we seek swords") and "Nos ferri reges, servi Fati" ("We, iron kings, servants of Doom"), evoking ancient barbaric fury akin to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana but fiercer.
