The stone slabs along the mountain are polished smooth and bright, and occasionally an ancient tree can block out the sun. The door panels on the street have long become rough and black, the lattice carvings on the door openings are covered with dust, the broken tile roofs are covered with dense grass, and the old wall leaning to one side has cracked carelessly. Looking up, the densely packed houses are scattered all over the hillside, like a grand group photo of residential houses.
This is Nuodeng, a famous Bai ethnic cultural ancient village located in Yunlong County, Yunnan. From the head of the village to the foot of the village, there is an altitude difference of nearly 300 meters on the sunny hillside. The name of Nuodeng Ancient Village has not changed for more than a thousand years since the Nanzhao period of the Tang Dynasty, so it is called the "Millennium Bai Village" and is also the oldest village in Yunnan.
Nuodeng Village is surrounded by mountains. The lowest point of the village is 1,900 meters above sea level, and the highest point, the Jade Emperor Pavilion, is more than 2,100 meters above sea level, with a large altitude difference. Except for a small piece of slightly flat terrace behind the "Dragon King Temple" at the foot of the mountain on the east side, almost all the houses are built on the hillside.
The architectural style of Nuodeng Village is basically the same as that of the Bai people's houses in Dali area, with architectural layouts such as "three courtyards and one screen wall", "four-sided courtyard", and "four-sided five courtyards". However, due to the mountain-based construction, the design is ingenious and varied, and the style is also diverse. Whether it is a quadrangle or a "three-sided courtyard" structure, the plane combination combines the characteristics of the mountain shape and terrain, so the Nuodeng Village residential buildings have a variety of appearances, fully reflecting the coordinated adaptation between man and nature.
Nuodeng residential buildings attach importance to exquisite craftsmanship. The doors, windows, wooden beams, columns, and eaves all pay attention to the beauty and fineness of the carved patterns. There are paintings or patterns on the gables and courtyard walls. The layout and craftsmanship of the main house, wing room, front room or screen wall of each family are unique, and it is almost impossible to find two houses that are exactly the same. The screen walls of Bai nationality buildings are very particular. The screen walls of Nuodeng Village are tall and conform to the natural characteristics of each house because the main house, wing rooms and hall rooms are staggered due to the height of the mountain.
The "gate" style is the most abundant in Nuodeng residential buildings, and the door directions are also different. Its style is luxurious and elegant. In addition, the style of the main house "hall" of each family reflects solemnity, simplicity and elegance. Many families still retain furniture, antiques and sundries from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Among the existing residential buildings, the buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties are the main ones, and there are also some buildings from the Republic of China.
