Today we will be discussing about how to Become Successful in Islam.
A man once came to al-Hasan al-Basri, a great scholar of Islam, and commented to him: “The sky does not shower us with rain.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”
Then another person came to him and said, “I am poor and I need to increase my wealth.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”
Then a third person came to him for advice, saying: “My wife is barren and we desire to have children.” He replied: “Seek Allah’s forgiveness.”
The people who were present, said to al-Hasan: “Every time a person came to you, seeking your advice, you instructed them one thing only, to seek Allah’s forgiveness, even though they have different problems. Why is this so?
Al-Hasan al-Basri said, “Have you not read the statement of Allah in the Quran?
Faqul-tus-tagfiroo Rabbakum: Innahoo Kaana Gaffaaraa.
Yursilis-samaa’aalay-kum midraaraa. Wa yumdid-kum bi amwaaliw wa baneen.
Wa yaj’al lakum Jannaat wa yaj’al lakum anhaaraa. (71-10/12)
‘I said “Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance; increase you in wealth and children; and grant you gardens wherein rivers flow.
(71: 10-12)
Allah tells us there are two things He sent to the earth that give a person safety and security from His punishment. The first one has been removed from us but the second is still with us, and will remain with us forever. The first thing was Rasoolullaahi (sas). Allah says in Surah Anfaal 8-33
Wa maa kaanallaahu li-yu’adzzibahum wa anta feehim
“Allah will not punish them while you are among them.”
And the second thing is istighfar, or seeking forgiveness, as the verse continues:
‘Wa maa kaanallaahu mu’adzzi-bahum wa hum yastagfiroon.
“Allah will not punish them as long as they sought forgiveness.” (8-33)
It’s a very small phrase— Astaghfirullah— and many of us learned it when we were young. But how many of us know about its benefits?
Istighfar is the act of seeking forgiveness from Allah, and this act removes our sins and helps us reach the goal of Paradise.. When we say: Astagfirullah, we are saying, I seek forgiveness in Allah or May Allah forgive me. But what other benefits does istighfar bring? When we ask for forgiveness, Allah gives us eight additional things. Today, I will mention 4 and in the second part I will conclude with the remaining 4. So, let us look again at the verses from surah Nuh:
1. Fa qul-tus-tagfiroo Rabbakum: Innahoo Kaana Gaffaaraa. (71-10)
And I said: Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is always Forgiving.
We sin by day and by night, and Allah forgives us by day and by night. Allah’s forgiveness is huge. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said, Allah extends His hand by the day so the sinner of the night can repent, and He extends His hand by the night so the sinner of the day can repent. (Muslim). He also said, The companion on the left, meaning the Angel, lifts his pen for six hours for the slave of Allah, who errs or sins. If this slave repents and seeks forgiveness for that error or sin, the Angel doesn’t record it. And if the slave doesn’t ask Allah for forgiveness, the Angel records it as one. So, whenever we sin, let’s rush to seek His forgiveness.
2.Yursilis-samaa’aalay-kum midraaraa. (71-11)
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers. Rain is a sign of Allah’s mercy as has been mentioned in the Quran and in the Sunnah. Forgiveness is one of the causes for Allah to send rain down. And most importantly, water gives life and without water there will be no life.
Guidance of the Quran has been compared to the effect that rain has on the dead earth. The same way that rain brings dead earth to life, Guidance from the Quran can bring a dead heart to life.
3. Wa yumdid-kum bi amwaaliw wa baneen (71-12)
And give you increase in wealth and children. All human beings love Wealth. And here Allah is promising to give us wealth through Istighfar, and also children. So, if anyone is having a difficult time financially, and also those who are unable to conceive, they should be seeking Allah’s forgiveness more and more. Istighfar will open doors that were closed. Wealth and children come from Allah and it is in turning to Him that we will get them, not in turning away from Him.
4. Wa yaj’al lakum Jannaat, wa yaj’al lakum anhaaraa. (71-12)
. . . and provide for you gardens, wherein rivers flow. Gardens and rivers are luxuries that very few of us can afford in this life. And yet for istighfar, Allah promises that He will give us gardens and rivers. It could be that we will get these in this world, but for sure we will get them in the hereafter, as gardens and rivers are the most common description of paradise in the Quran. We should be constant is seeking Allah’s forgiveness, knowing that the paradise of Allah awaits those who are consumed with istighfar.
