Recently, the Indian Army celebrated 40 years of 'Operation Meghdoot'.
Due to Pakistan’s mountaineering expeditions in Siachen, India launched Operation Meghdoot in 1984. The operation involved a series of military maneuvers, including airlifting troops to high-altitude areas, establishing bases, and conducting combat operations on glacial peaks.
If Pakistan had got the locational advantage of Siachen, it would have become a big threat to India from the west in Ladakh in addition to Chinese threats from the east in Aksai Chin.
Siachen Glacier
The 78 km long Glacier is located in the eastern Karakoram range in the Himalayas.
It is just northeast of the point NJ9842 where the Line of Control between India and Pakistan ends. It is known for being the world’s highest battlefield.
It is the longest glacier in Karakoram and second-longest in the world’s non-polar areas after Fedchenko Glacier in Tajikistan
