Vertebroplasty
Definition: A minimally invasive procedure where medical-grade bone cement is injected into a fractured vertebra.
Purpose: Stabilizes compression fractures of the spine, usually caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or tumors.
Procedure:
A needle is guided into the collapsed vertebra under imaging (fluoroscopy or CT).
Cement is injected, hardening quickly to stabilize the bone.
Benefits:
Rapid pain relief in many patients.
Prevents further collapse of the vertebra.
Limitations:
Does not restore vertebral height.
Risk of cement leakage, which can cause complications.
Kyphoplasty
Definition: Similar to vertebroplasty, but includes an additional step to restore vertebral height.
Procedure:
A balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra and inflated to create a cavity and attempt to restore height.
Bone cement is then injected into the cavity.
Benefits:
Pain relief and stabilization.
Partial restoration of vertebral height and correction of spinal deformity (kyphosis).
Limitations:
More complex and costly than vertebroplasty.
Risks similar to vertebroplasty (cement leakage, infection, bleeding).
