1. No chest resonance.
2. His vocal cords don’t open fully, making his sound very thin. When he sings, there’s no movement to inhale or open the vocal cords, as if natural lyric tenor vocalization would suffice. However, in the early 19th century, many lyric tenors were also capable of performing dramatic tenor repertoire.
3. He claimed he once tied a belt around his abdomen to practice breath support, but that’s just a joke. Doing so would prevent him from ever developing true abdominal breath support. He might take in air into his abdomen before singing, but it doesn’t help. When he sings the first note, the sound goes straight to his vocal cords. How could he have abdominal breath support? Look at his waist—so slim! And yet he sings opera?
His high notes are powered from above the throat, not from the abdomen.
I originally considered making a few clips to compare him with Georges Thill, but I just don’t feel the motivation; his level doesn’t inspire me. I don’t see the value in it. I will instead create a separate segment featuring French tenors singing this aria. For “15-Minute Tenor” types, I generally don’t listen.
