Immigration is often discussed in moral or ideological terms.
But immigration is not an abstraction — it is a material process operating through housing markets, labour systems, institutions, and everyday social life.
In this final episode of the immigration series, I step back from slogans and ask a harder question: what would a serious country actually do if it wanted immigration policy to work?
Across the series, I’ve examined immigration through economics, demographics, culture, and institutional capacity.
This episode brings those threads together.
Immigration can help ageing societies manage labour shortages and fiscal pressure. But it cannot compensate for housing systems built around speculation, weak planning, or declining state capacity. And when policy ignores those realities, public trust erodes.
This episode is not about how immigration should work in theory.
It is about how it actually works — and what realism, responsibility, and durability require.
I’d be very interested in your thoughts on the questions raised at the end of the episode.
Thank you for following the series, and I look forward to seeing you back on the channel.
