Don't Be Fooled By "ph Balanced Soap" Marketing Schemes!

The facts expressed here do NOT apply to leave-on products like face masks, chemical peels, etc. Statements made in this tutorial are not my opinion, rather scientific facts that can be easily checked out & verified. As far as wash-off soap goes, pH level is nothing more than a marketing scheme! Companies are marketing the "perfect pH level soap", trying to convince everyone that it keeps skin healthy! Do NOT be fooled.

** pH does NOT indicate how harsh or mild a product is **
Tap water has a pH of 7. So, even if you're using the "perfect pH balanced soap", the cleanser mixes with water & the product's pH level is immediately changed. Diluting a product with water will make an acidic pH less acidic and an alkali pH less alkali; it's basically going to make the body wash's pH level more neutral. {the soap was 5.3, but once mixed with water it's 6.6}

What is the significance of a soap's pH level? What does it mean for your skin? In a nutshell, nothing at all! Your skin, or rather your "acid mantle" has a slightly acidic pH level between 5.5-6.5. The acid mantle is a fine film that acts as a barrier & regulates oil & water. When bathing, your acid mantle's pH slightly fluctuates then returns to normal as quick as 15 minutes later. So, even if you used a highly acidic or highly alkaline product, it wouldn’t permanently change the natural pH of your acid mantle.

So when should pH be considered? A few examples include:
**When making leave-on products (like face masks) ** For leave on bath products, the pH level really does matter! Leaving an extremely acidic or alkaline product on your skin for hours at a time could potentially irritate it & may cause damage.
*If working with a preservative that works in a specific pH range (or just use a preservative that doesn't require a specific pH level to work).
*To alter the consistency of a surfactant-based emulsion. Like If you're trying to thicken the emulsion using table salt, the pH level needs to be in a specific range to get a viscous solution.
*I also read that pH level is important when making cold processed soap.

What is pH? pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is. pH indicates the potential of hydrogen. The pH scale goes from 0-14. ** Some sites state the pH scale is 1-14. Other state it is 0-14. 0 is the most acidic, 7 is neutral, &14 is the most alkali. ** The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution (a water solution). pH is really a measure of the relative amount of free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in the water.

FINAL WORD:
Your skin or acid mantle balances pH on its own. If your skin feels good after using a product, keep using it! If it's dried out or too oily, then switch or try something new. Just know that the pH level of the soap you're using has nothing to do with these results.
** So, if you're buying body wash/shower gel for the "perfect pH level", you are wasting your money my friend! ** And, if you're testing your DIY body wash/shower gel for the "perfect pH level", you are wasting your time my friend! This tutorial was made to stop the spread of misinformation.
