When an elephant passes away, the herd doesn’t simply move on. They engage in behaviors that researchers describe as "thanatological" (the study of death and dying).
The Silent Vigil: Herd members often stand in silence around the body for hours or even days. They may gently touch the carcass with their trunks or soles of their feet, as if trying to rouse the individual.
Carrying the Dead: Mothers have been observed carrying their deceased calves for days, refusing to let go, showcasing a heartbreaking level of maternal attachment.
"Burial" Behaviors: While they don’t dig graves, elephants have been seen covering the deceased with branches, leaves, and soil.
Revisiting the Bones: Years after a member has died, herds often return to the exact spot where the bones lie. They will pick up and pass the ivory around, suggesting a form of "remembering" or honoring the individual.
