As national tension over the Trump administration's deployment of ICE in U.S. cities escalates, activists have called for a general strike on Friday, Jan. 30, in protest of the immigration enforcement, calling on people to avoid school, work and shopping.
"Students at the University of Minnesota called for a shutdown last week and this week there was a goal to make it a nationwide shutdown," executive director of CAIR Faten Odeh told 1010 WINS.
The economic blackout, prompted by advocacy in Minneapolis, has been supported by advocacy groups, labor unions and even celebrities like Pedro Pascal as a response to ICE's detention and deportation.
"Really what we're seeing are people really fed up with the war machine that we're seeing attacking people with perceived migration status," Odeh said.
Participation numbers in the general strike are not clear. A rally will be held by the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), organizers, elected officials and immigrant New Yorkers in Foley Square on Friday afternoon in solidarity with the national shutdown.
