Greetings and welcome to Mombasa, Kenya - a vibrant city located on the eastern coast of the country, facing the majestic Indian Ocean. Mombasa is the second largest city and metropolitan area in Kenya, and has been a significant center for trade for many centuries.

The street food culture of Mombasa is an essential aspect of the local culture, reflecting influences from both India and the Arabian Peninsula. Come with me as we embark on a journey to explore this city’s unique street food scene!

WATERFRONT: At the waterfront , we enjoyed some coconut fritters and bateta champ (potato fritters stuffed with minced meat, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and more). We also tried viazi karai (fried potatoes) with chutney, masala chai, and ginger chai.

OLD TOWN: Here, we saw why this area of town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We met some craft vendors, saw Fort Jesus National Monument (but couldn’t go inside, as it was closed), and tried a local stimulant called khat.

MISHKAK: Along the street, we tried some mishkak with tamarind sauce and cabbage salad from a local vendor. We also enjoyed some sugarcane juice with lemon and ginger.

BARKA RESTAURANT: At Barka Restaurant, we enjoyed an amazing chicken shawarma sandwich and a grilled turnover called a Swahili pizza!
