There are several definitions for float mounting a print. Traditionally, when referring to matting and framing, it means exposing the edges of your print or photo within the mat rather than having the window mat overlap the print. This is used when you want to see the edges of the paper.
This technique makes the photograph or artwork appear to be“floating” within a window mat. Combine this with a frame and UV-filtering acrylic to ensure professional, archival preservation for artwork on display.
This video demonstrates how to properly float mount a photo using acid-free materials to protect and display your artwork. It demonstrates two methods of using P 90 Plus Tape to create hidden t-hinges to support the artwork.
Step-by-Step Guide:
1️ Prepare Your Materials
• Lay out the archival window mat and backing board on a clean, flat surface.
• Ensure your photo is clean and free of dust.
2️ Position the Photo
• Center the photo on the backing board, leaving equal spacing around the edges.
3️ Secure the Photo
• Watch video to see how to attach tape to board and photo
4 Final Adjustments & Display
• Place the mounted piece in a frame with UV-filtering acrylic for display
