Another early game from Nichibutsu featuring some really impressive pseudo-3D parallax scrolling, Mag Max is yet another game that focuses on different play fields.
In this instance, the player gets to choose whether they want to fight above or below ground, using warp holes to swap between the the two. Each zone is full of enemies to destroy, and the key to success is finding and collecting the parts to transform your starting ship into a bipedal death-bot with super lasers. Something that's even cooler is the fact the order in which you collect the parts determines how the robot is built.
This isn't an especially complicated game, but it looks great and has some cool ideas. There's no ending, and you continually loop around the various zones to accrue a higher score, but it's worth checking out.
