How It Works

Unlike mechanical slide carburetors where the slide is directly controlled by the throttle cable, the diaphragm (or Constant Velocity - CV) carburetor uses vacuum pressure to lift a piston/slide, which in turn lifts a tapered needle to meter fuel flow. 

Air Intake: The rider's throttle input opens a butterfly valve, allowing more air into the carburetor throat.

Vacuum Creation: The increased air speed through a narrowed section (Venturi effect) creates an area of low pressure, or vacuum.

Diaphragm/Piston Movement: This vacuum acts on the sealed area above the rubber diaphragm, causing it to lift the attached piston/slide. The speed of this movement is damped, resulting in smooth engine operation.

Fuel Metering: As the piston/slide rises, it lifts the jet needle, which allows a precise amount of fuel from the float bowl to be drawn into the air stream through the main jet and passages.

Mixture Delivery: The atomized fuel and air mixture is then delivered to the engine's combustion chamber for ignition. 

Key Components

Diaphragm: A flexible, high-quality rubber or fabric sheet that senses vacuum and moves the piston assembly.

Piston/Slide: A component lifted by the diaphragm's movement, which controls the size of the air passage (venturi).

Jet Needle: A tapered needle attached to the piston/slide that moves within the needle jet to regulate fuel flow.

Float Chamber (Bowl): A reservoir of fuel where the main jet and idle jets are located.

Jets & Passages: Precisely machined openings (idle, midrange, and main jets) and passages that regulate the volume of fuel at different throttle ranges.
