About the chant:
Lent changes things. After the last gluttony of Mardi Gras (Shrove Tuesday) arrives the solemn liturgy of Ash Wednesday, when the Church reminds all humans they are dust, and unto dust they shall return. There follows a 40-day period of penitence, prayer, and lamenting for sins; the colors and liturgical ornaments of the sanctuary are dimmed, the music may be more somber, and the joyful shouts of "Alleluia" are banished until Easter. This time of fasting and self-mortification is the proper context for a hymn such as Guillaume Dufay's Audi, benigne conditor.
