Here is a quick HOW TO video on spreading cover crop seed and using Full Circle Compost BOOST Soil Amendment on top for a germination blanket and nutrition. We are only doing a 5'x5' area in this video for demonstration. You would do the same concept for a full garden or field. 1 bag of BOOST covers 25 sq ft or 1 cubic yards of BOOST covers 1,350 sq ft.
Fall Cover Crop: Farmer Craig says, "Cover crops are a great way to build free nitrogen, disease resistance, and beneficial biology in the soil. It also enhances soil structure to hold moisture all winter long and can become organic matter through building root mass once the plant material is incorporated back into the soil."
Putting in cover crops while there is still enough warmth for seeds to germinate is key. He suggests finding a winter cover crop blend (for example a mixture of wheat, oats, winter peas, barley, rye, clover, and triticale or a mixture there of). There are even edible cover crops. Best to have cover crops in by Sept or October here in Nevada.
Steps:
1.) Create seed beds around existing plants or clear dead vegetation in planting beds.
2.) Spread seed.
3.) Top Dress 1/4" of BOOST
4.) Roll that field to create seed to soil contact.
5.) Water.
6.) Grow your cover crop.
The easiest way to manage your cover crops is with your lawn mower/weed eater. After 12" growth mow back to 6" for "green manuring" (mulching). Cover crops can get out of control so make sure to mow.
In the Spring, you can till your cover crops into the soil or you can strip till (Google strip tilling).
