妖怪（ようかい）は、日本で伝承される民間信仰において、人間の理解を超える奇怪で異常な現象や、あるいはそれらを起こす、不可思議な力を持つ非日常的・非科学的な存在のこと。妖（あやかし）または物の怪（もののけ）、魔物（まもの）とも呼ばれる。

妖怪は日本古来のアニミズムや八百万の神の思想に深く根ざしており、その思想が森羅万象に神の存在を見出す一方で、否定的に把握された存在や現象は妖怪になりうるという表裏一体の関係がなされてきた

Yōkai are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits and demons in Japanese folklore. Yōkai range diversely from the malevolent to the mischievous, or occasionally bring good fortune to those who encounter them. Often they possess animal features, other times they can appear mostly human, some look like inanimate objects and others have no discernible shape. Yōkai usually have spiritual or supernatural power, with shapeshifting being one of the most common. Yōkai that have the ability to shapeshift are called bakemono / obake.
