Hi all
Day 1 of the Whale trail turned out to be one of the hardest hiking days I have ever done in my life. The first day of the whale trail is the toughest with the most energy expended, even in the dry. Add in torrential rain and strong gusts of wind and there were a few points on the hike that had me (and possibly the rest of the crew we hiked with) questioning our life choices.
The only way out was through though so we soldiered on!
The first day from the Potberg hut to the Cupidoskraal hut is 15.5km with two major climbs - the first to the top of the Potberg is 610m in elevation gain and is within the first 5km of the hike. Once at the top it is a gradual decent to about the 10km mark before climbing again. Don't underestimate this second climb as it goes on for what feels forever.
We have two river crossings in knee deep water due to the rain - usually these crossings are much dryer.
