With a box office estimate of ₹1,150–1,200 crores, and over 45 million hours of watch time on Netflix, there’s no doubt that Rajamouli’s latest blockbuster, RRR is a super hit amongst audiences. Mind you, Netflix only has the Hindi dub while other platforms have the movie in other languages, and are performing well. Keeping the spectacular cinematography, action choreography, performances, and direction aside, let’s take a look at the content of RRR and what it says about today’s audiences!
By the way, we love talking about content creation as well as content marketing, so do subscribe to Silver Mantle for regular videos on the same!
1. Content is Our King!
There was a time when, for those who only watch Hindi Cinema, content-driven films were synonymous with Ayushmann Khurana. Such films were so rare, that we ended up identifying them as the domain of a single actor, rather than the type of films that should be the norm! Now, over the last 2-3 years, OTT penetration has allowed us to see what Kannada, Tamil, Telugu films have to offer, and we’re not going back!
RRR takes the time to submerge audiences into its world. Character dynamics, motivations, the world they inhabit, and their challenges are all highlighted within the first 20-30 minutes of the film, so that when Raju and Bheem finally meet, we are already invested in their story. This is why the Dosti montage that follows is so powerful - simply because we understand these people on a deeper level and know instinctively that their friendship is a bond unlike others. When the title of the film is finally revealed on their union, we get a rush of satisfaction that further deepens our level of emotional investment in the film. Add to that the backdrop of pre-independence India, the evil Scott Buxton and his wife, and the commentary on social discrimination, and the film has enough to keep you emotionally hooked.
2. We Think Effort is Cool!!
In Spite of the over-the-top action sequences, the physics-defying choreography, and sheer magnitude and scale of the setting, RRR never feels campy or frivolous. The overarching theme of British rule and the graphic violence shown towards Indians pulls down the crazy action scenes and creates a balance that makes the overall tone very earnest. As an audience member, you can feel the effort and thought that’s gone into the film - something that is, unfortunately, a rarity in today’s times.
What this says is that we respond positively to films that actually believe in themselves (and also have great content to offer). And, it’s not just about pomp-and-show. Kashmir Files, another blockbuster hit of this year, did not have the best production value, let’s be honest. But the story itself, its presentation of what was happening in Kashmir, and the treatment of characters is what made audiences resonate with the film. No matter what your political beliefs are, you cannot deny the earnestness of the creator and the sheer level of dedication that went into making it. The same applies to RRR.
3. We Want to Relate!
Recently, Anurag Kashyap said that Hindi films are not working as they are not “rooted in culture”. When there is a huge disconnect between the content and the audience that it is intended for, the content piece fails as a product. Uur exposure to great works like Super Deluxe, Jersey, Arjun Reddy, Bahubaali and countless others has raised the bar for audiences and what they now expect, even from the biggest stars of Bollywood. That's probably one reason why Bollywood has seen such massive flops this year, with the likes of Prithviraj and Shamshera proving that we’ve lost our faith in this industry.
RRR portrays pre-independence India, and though it would not be fair to say it’s 100% historically accurate, it still has many content themes that resonate with audiences across the globe. With commentary on discrimination, racism, friendship, passion, the freedom struggle, and the lives of average Indian people (who are not super anglicized), the film is highly relatable.
RRR also benefited from the current public discourse around the gaps in the history we are taught in schools, the over-dependence on English as a medium of communication, national pride, cultural pride, and the political landscape. All of these factors primed Indian audiences to fully enjoy the content and messaging of RRR, and since these themes are not unique to India, the film also resonated with global audiences.
