Welcome to Session 6 of our scientific research series! In this video, we tackle the essential task of crafting a clear and concise Methods and Materials section for your research paper. A well-written Methods section is crucial for ensuring the reproducibility and replicability of your work, making it a cornerstone of good scientific practice.
In this session, we'll provide a straightforward outline for writing your Materials and Methods. You'll learn:
What information to include: Discover the key technical details, population data, and ethical considerations (like informed consent and IRB approval) that must be present.
What information to exclude: Understand how to avoid overemphasizing widely used statistical methods and maintain focus on critical details.
How to organize analytical steps: Learn strategies to present your methods chronologically and use subheadings effectively, enhancing clarity and reproducibility.
The importance of data and code sharing: Explore why sharing your data and code is vital for increasing research transparency and fostering collaboration.
We'll also analyze the structure of Methods sections from sample papers addressing health problems in Africa, providing practical examples to guide your writing.
Whether you’re writing your first paper or trying to find your footing in academic publishing, Rethé offers more than training. It offers community, encouragement, and practical steps forward. You don’t need to wait for permission to share your voice. With the right support, you can publish your work and help shape scientific conversations as a confident contributor from Africa.
Led by award-winning data scientist Dr. Elaine O. Nsoesie, Rethé provides the tools, training, and mentorship African researchers need to publish their work with confidence. Since 2019, we’ve partnered with universities and organizations across Africa to support more than 1,000 early-career researchers through hands-on workshops, digital resources, and community-centered fellowships.
We have held online workshops in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa; Data Science Africa, Nairobi, Kenya; DLabs, Dar, Tanzania; NM-AIST, Arusha, Tanzania; and Bowen University, Osun State, Nigeria.
Rethé offers practical training and mentorship so they gain confidence, publish their research, and contribute to global scientific progress.
