Why didn’t England enter the Thirty Years’ War?
After relinquishing the Bohemian crown, Frederick V returned to his homeland and ruling territory, the Palatinate.
Located in the southwest of Germany, the Palatinate was one of the seven prince-electorates of the Holy Roman Empire, possessing the privilege of participating in the election of the emperor. It was also a stronghold of Lutheran and Calvinist forces.
Though Frederick V continued his resistance through alliances in the Palatinate, England, the Netherlands, and France offered only limited support.
Frederick’s father-in-law, James I of England (1603–1625), preferred peace and prioritized diplomatic relations with Catholic Spain.
In order to ease tensions heightened during the conflict between Elizabeth I and Philip II of Spain, James I sought a marriage alliance with the royal family of Philip IV.
Moreover, due to political instability and religious conflict at home, it was difficult for James I to secure war funds from Parliament.
Throughout the reign of Elizabeth I (1558–1603) of the Tudor dynasty, England’s Protestant reformers had persistently demanded further reforms within the Church of England.
