The Redux series of albums aims to stay true to the spirit of the original work while making it the best it can possibly be. Each song receives a new mix, done by me.
Red Rose Speedway’s recording stretched over nearly the entirety of 1972 as Wings toured Europe. Initially planned as a double LP due to the wealth of material from the sessions, the album was cut to a single LP at EMI’s request on account of Wings’ current critical standing and the commercial performance of Wild Life. Tracks that were left on the cutting room floor either trickled out over the next decade and a half or languished in the purgatory that was the Cold Cuts project.
The album starts and ends the same way with Big Barn Bed and the lengthy medley. To keep the energy up, I swapped the places of Get on the Right Thing and My Love. Denny Laine’s I Would Only Smile takes the place, stylistically speaking, of One More Kiss, which is moved to the album’s latter half. Single Pigeon, the album’s shortest track precedes the grandeur of Little Lamb Dragonfly.
RRS Redux’s biggest addition is Night Out (First Band on the Moon), a pseudo-medley of three separate tracks — Night Out, Loup (1st Indian on the Moon), and The Mess (Live). The track conceptually follows Wings as they have…well, a night out on the moon. Loup is presented differently here, with the opening vocal section following the atmospheric second section. We get a reprise of Loup following The Mess. I tried as best I could to minimize the audience effects at the end of the song. As for the rest of the song, imagine the clapping is part of the “night out.”
One More Kiss serves as a palate cleanser after Night Out. The country vibe segues nicely into I Lie Around which fades into Tragedy, which I feel is a natural fit as the penultimate track before the big medley. The only track removed is When the Night — the song’s similarity to Tomorrow on the previous album has always bothered me but for the sake of this “timeline,” we can say it becomes a B-side to My Love or something. Mama’s Little Girl and 1882 are released on Wild Life the year prior.
