Описание: Lesotho, formerly known as Basutoland, was renamed to the Kingdom of Lesotho upon independence. It is a country in Southern Africa with an area of over 30,000 square kilometers and a population of about 2 million people. It was previously a British Protectorate. Lesotho gained independence on October 4th 1966 and is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations and Southern African Development Community(SADC). Maseru is its capital and largest city. ‘Lesotho’ loosely translates to ‘The Land of the Sotho’. Its people are referred to as Basotho and its currency is Lesotho loti and South African rand.

Lesotho’s position is unusual. It is the Southernmost landlocked country in the world. It is the largest of the world’s three independent states completely surrounded by another country’s territory. San Marino and Vatican City are the other two states. Lesotho is also the only state of its kind outside of the Italian peninsula and is a microstate as well. The country is simply an enclave.
