ACHS Speaker Series with Richard Guy Wilson:
What is Charlottesville’s architecture? While it is many styles and appearances, the main theme can be called “Colonial Revival,” and contains elements that draw upon the American past. The pencil and pen of Thomas Jefferson can be seen in many buildings erected over the years. This talk will examine the Colonial Revival theme and reference the works of several architects such as Milton Grigg, Stanislaw Makielski, Fiske Kimball, Walter Dabney Blair (the architect of the Historical Society’s building) and others.
Richard Guy Wilson is Commonwealth Professor emeritus in Architectural History at the University of Virginia. His many books, articles and exhibits include different aspects of American and modern architecture including Thomas Jefferson and the Colonial Revival.
