New Religious Microstate in Albania: The Bektashi Order's Sovereign State

The Bektashi Order has its origins in the Ottoman Empire in the 13th century, and its influence grew significantly during the 15th century when it played a key role in the elite Janissary Corps of the Ottoman military. After being banned from Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in the early 20th century, the Bektashi headquarters were relocated to Albania, where they have since operated.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama announced this initiative as a way to highlight Albania's long-standing tradition of religious harmony and its role in promoting moderation. The microstate will provide sovereignty to the Bektashi religious leadership, allowing them to govern their own affairs, much like the Vatican does for the Catholic Church.
