Ideas like whole language, balanced literacy, discovery learning, or learning styles have remained influential in classrooms for years. But research in the science of reading and the science of learning has repeatedly shown that many of these approaches are not the most effective ways to teach foundational skills.
So why do these ideas continue to spread?
One important reason may be cognitive bias. Once people adopt a belief about teaching, that belief can become part of their professional identity. When evidence challenges that belief, it can feel personal — almost like questioning someone’s worldview.
In this video, I share my thoughts on:
• why unsupported ideas can become deeply rooted in education
• how confirmation bias affects teaching practices
• why evidence-based instruction can face resistance
• what this means for reading instruction and literacy
