What went wrong in the European migrant crisis? Was it really a lack of strong pro-EU forces which was at the core of this crisis? At a Maastricht meeting of pan-European political party Volt, political scientist Julius Ortjens explained why the real crisis is still there, why it has less to do with mass migration and more to do with European identity, and why the migration crisis has demonstrated what is truly missing in the EU. By comparing Russia's Putin, Germany's Merkel and Hungary's Orbán and their different definitions of European identity, Julius argues that, what is missing in the EU, are democratic resources that allow citizens to ask themselves the questions necessary to overcome the European identity crisis: What is “Europe”? What are our common responsibilities? And when should we show solidarity? Eventually, it should not be Merkel and Orbán who decide this, but the citizens themselves.
