Camels - Secrets of the Desert’s Legendary ‘Ships’ | Explore the Animal Kingdom
Many people only know that camels are large animals living in the desert, feeding on thorny plants and infamous for spitting when annoyed. Some species have two humps, while others appear to have only one—and it was once thought those humps stored water. Humans even liken themselves to camels when carrying heavy burdens. That’s probably all the general public usually knows about these “ships of the desert.” In this video, we’ll dive into the world of camels—discover why they thrive in harsh desert environments, whether they truly live nowhere else, why some have one hump and some two, and uncover many more fascinating secrets of this extraordinary creature.
The camel’s evolutionary journey began tens of millions of years ago. Scientists believe the earliest ancestors of today’s camels appeared around 40 million years ago in North America, in tropical forests, under the name Protylopus—an extinct early hoofed mammal. Researchers classify Protylopus in the Camelidae family, and it was the smallest and oldest known ancient camel species. Over time, those ancient camels grew larger and diversified into many species, but sadly none of those original lineages survive today.
