Hairy Woodpeckers are about 2x the size of Downy Woodpeckers and are often mistaken for one another. At a glance the size can help you identify them, and one way to keep it straight is "Downy = Tiny". Hairy Woodpeckers also have a much larger/longer beak in relation to their head and body size. With that being said, the Male Hairy and the Male Downy Woodpeckers both have a small amount of red on the back of their heads while the females both are completely without the red ♥️
