Solstice is a puzzle-platformer for the NES starring a beefy wizard named Shadax. It also has some of the beefiest 8-bit music ever composed! Composer Tim Follin squeezed everything he could out of the NES hardware, juicing up the percussion by borrowing from the triangle channel and creating “chords” by using lightning-fast arpeggiations.
This title theme is just bonkers! It’s about as close as a chiptune ever gets to prog rock. You can definitely hear the influence of Yes and Jethro Tull as well as Irish folk music. Crazy fact: this title theme is longer than the entire soundtrack of Super Mario Bros 1!
As far as the arrangement goes, sweet Moses on toast it was a challenge! But it was loads of fun to figure out what Tim Follin was up to and I actually think the arrangement helps bring out some aspects that you don't hear as much in the original.
