Hello everyone, I’m delighted to share the second instalment of this series with you. Documenting Park Hill was a truly enjoyable experience, and I was particularly delighted to spend time at the South Street Kitchen Cafe, which occupies a double-height corner of Phase 1 and beautifully reflects the building’s raw material DNA.
Today, we examine Park Hill in Sheffield. This Grade II*-listed estate represents a monumental shift in post-war housing, famously transposing the traditional terraced street into a linear, elevated plane known as “streets in the sky”. Architecturally, Park Hill is defined by its structural rationalism and a sinuous plan that responds directly to its steep topography. The building operates as a "neighbourhood in one building," utilising a continuous reinforced-concrete frame to generate social territory through circulation.
Park Hill is now a global case study in adaptive reuse.
By prioritising a "fabric-first" strategy, recent interventions by Mikhail Riches have retained over 90% of the original structure, aligning with the ethic of "never demolish". We explore how the dual façade logic, serves as a sophisticated environmental and social strategy. Park Hill proves that robust frames, when treated with material honesty, can host multiple generations of inhabitation while retaining their modernist identity.
If there are any specific architectural buildings you would recommend for future analysis, or any relevant research and literature you suggest I explore, please let me know in the comments.
For a comprehensive academic analysis regarding the structural phasing and theoretical parallels of Park Hill, please visit my Substack adamsmadeline.substack.com. There, I engage in a deeper interrogation of the site’s tectonic honesty and its relationship to the works of Lacaton & Vassal, John F. C. Turner, and Anupama Kundoo.
