Sunetra Pawar, Rajya Sabha MP and wife of late Ajit Pawar, is set to take oath as Maharashtra Dy CM. Her oath ceremony is scheduled for Saturday evening at 5 pm in Mumbai. Sunetra will be the first woman Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. She can be sworn in without currently being an MLA under constitutional provisions. Article 164(4) of the Constitution allows a non-legislature member to become a minister for up to six months. To retain the Deputy CM post, Sunetra must become an MLA or MLC within six months. The Baramati assembly seat, vacated after Ajit Pawar’s death, could be used for her by-poll entry. Sunetra will receive all portfolios held by Ajit Pawar except Finance and Planning, which CM Fadnavis will currently handle. CM Devendra Fadnavis has said the Mahayuti alliance will support NCP’s decision on her appointment. NCP chief Sharad Pawar said he learned about her swearing-in only from media reports...indicating internal party communication gaps.
