Types of Borane:

1. Simple Boranes (BxHy):

a. Diborane (B₂H₆): The simplest borane, with a bridge structure involving hydrogen atoms.
b. Pentaborane (B₅H₉): Contains five boron atoms in a pyramidal cluster.
c. Decaborane (B₁₀H₁₄): A more complex borane with a 10-boron cluster.

2. Cluster Boranes: These have polyhedral or closed geometries.

a. Closo-boranes: Fully closed polyhedral structures (e.g., B₆H₆²⁻).
b. Nido-boranes: Open structures derived from closo-boranes by removing a vertex (e.g., B₄H₁₀).
c. Arachno-boranes: More open structures, derived by removing multiple vertices from closo-boranes (e.g., B₅H₁₁).
d. Klado-boranes: represent a family of boranes that are derived from larger closo structures but are missing a few vertices.

Carboranes

Carboranes are clusters containing boron, carbon, and hydrogen. They are derived from boranes by substituting one or more boron atoms with carbon atoms. Carboranes are also classified based on their structure:

1. Closo-Carboranes:

Fully closed structures with high thermal and chemical stability.
Example: C₂B₁₀H₁₂, a common icosahedral closo-carborane.

2. Nido-Carboranes:

Open structures derived from closo-carboranes by removing a vertex.
Example: C₂B₄H₈.

3. Arachno-Carboranes:

More open structures with fewer boron and carbon atoms than nido-carboranes.
Example: C₂B₃H₇.
