Can a teenager choose not to see a parent even if they have joint custody? A teenager is a minor. The court has made a decision about custody and parenting time. When the child is younger, you have all the say in what happens to parenting time. A teenager may prefer to hang out with their friends. The teenager needs to go to the parent scheduled for parenting time. It is not an option left to the parent or the teenager. You can be creative and invite your teenage child to bring friends and hang out together. Your co-parent is not encouraging your teenage child to do parenting time. You need to call your lawyer. You need to file a motion. The motion will either modify parenting time or compel your co-parent to encourage your teenage child to comply.
