Описание: Windy Hill Transmitter is a communications site located on the summit of Windy Hill, near Saddleworth Moor, just off the M62 motorway in Greater Manchester, England. Standing at approximately 91m tall, it is the highest point on the M62 motorway at 372m above sea level and overlooks the surrounding moorland.

Originally constructed in 1951 as a microwave relay station for television broadcasting between Manchester and Leeds, the site was later expanded during the Cold War to serve as a key node in the UK’s "Backbone" microwave communications network. This network was designed to maintain long-distance communication in the event of a nuclear attack, with Windy Hill acting as a critical link between northern and southern relay stations. The system operated from 1963 until 1989, after which the Cold War-era microwave dishes were removed by 2005, with the final ones cleared by 2015.
