Her breath hitched as she pried open the rusted door of a roadside pharmacy, the metallic groan sounding like a gunshot in the stillness of the abandoned town. Inside, the air tasted of stale dust and old antiseptic, but her heart leaped when her flashlight beam caught the crinkle of a forgotten plastic bag in the corner. She moved with practiced, predatory efficiency, ignoring the luxury of comfort to focus on the grit of survival: two dented cans of peaches, a half-empty bottle of sterile water, and a single pack of dry batteries. Every find was a small victory against the creeping despair of the wasteland, a heavy but necessary weight in her pack that promised she would see day fourteen.
