BAN XIAOXUE KICKS OFF LOW PROFILE SHANGHAI FASHION WEEK
Ban Xiaoxue's new collection, called "Love for waste not," kicked off Shanghai Fashion Week Wednesday (8 APRIL 2015).
The Chinese designer, who won the International Woolmark Prize Asia award in 2012, usually pays great attention to textiles. He has said he often first thinks about the fabric, rather than the theme of a collection.
This year, he chose to focus on traditional patterns.
"I used a lot of old style patterns. You can see a lot of patchwork, stripes and lace. We brought in a lot of old components. I wanted to use this combination and opposition of different patterns to showcase a new style," he said.
Ban Xiaoxue, who showed his work at London Fashion Week in 2012, says he is still happy to present his new creations in China.
"Shanghai Fashion Week has always shown strong support to original designs. And this time, they let us do the opening show. So we greatly appreciate this platform to share our designs," he explained.
45 brands will be able to showcase their Autumn/Winter collections at Taipinghu Lake, in downtown Shanghai.
No red carpet opening ceremony was held this year, presumably because the Shanghai government wants to avoid crowd gathering after the tragic stampede which occurred on New Year's eve.
36 people were killed and 49 left injured on Shanghai's popular riverfront on December 31st.
Unlike other fashion events like Paris, London or Milan, Shanghai Fashion Week is mainly a platform for young local designers, wanting to make a name for themselves.
Several other young chinese designers, like Xhang Yuhao and Cindy Soong, are presenting their new collections this week.
No big celebrities are expected, except Leo Ku Kui-Kei, a famous Hong Kong singer and model, turned creative director, who will present his brand's (Solo Celeb and HTDG) latest collection on April 13.
