This short film was created as part of a project to explore Viking Board Games through a modern lens. It provides a creative interpretation of the sculpture ‘The Game Piece’ located in the tranquility garden beside Áras an Chontae, Mullingar.
The film is a collaboration by film Maker Miroslav Wycka and choreographer Siobhan Murphy from Dionysus School of Dance. It features a digital model of the original Viking Age game piece from Lough Swedy, which inspired the sculpture, and a digital model of the ornate gaming board found during Archaeological Excavations at Ballinderry Crannóg near Moate. These artefacts are housed in the National Museum of Ireland and the digital models were created by the Discovery Programme, Centre for Archaeology and Innovation in Ireland, with permission from the National Museum of Ireland.
The project has been made possible thanks to funding from the Creative Ireland Programme, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts and the Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.
