People ask me why I speak about values so much, and I do. I start with my clients, individuals, and organizations asking, "What do you believe?" Core Values, virtues, unifying principles, or whatever you call them, are the foundation of our lives, they define our character. Anyone with half a lick of sense and taking a moment to think realizes that your brain and soul control your actions, and your actions connect you to the external world. I'm not a theologian or a neurosurgeon, but your values guide your brain and soul, so your external world will reflect your internal world. To change your external world, you must first change your internal world. Brian Tracy calls this the Law of Correspondence because it's true for everyone.
Getting your unifying principles right is essential; otherwise, you can spend a lot of time trying to push a rope or getting whipped around by one. So, you can start with a web search for core values, but more than one word is needed. Research the words, go to deep wisdom in the Bible, the Patristic Fathers, or start with the Stoic first four: Courage, Wisdom, Justice, and Temperance, but you need to define it for yourself. That's why I like the use of Unifying Principles. In the research, you feed the brain and soul; in the writing, you put it in the context of your life and commit it to memory. This effort sounds heavy and deep, but get a first chop done, and over the following months, you'll start seeing where you can refine them. At most, seven, all written as sentences in the first person, then prioritize them.
Once again, I am not a theologian, but if you're a Christian, here's a place to start: Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." And "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." You don't have to start here, but there's plenty of internal work in just these two great commandments on which the Church is built.
So, work on yours this week for fifteen to thirty minutes a day. You can have a draft by the end of the week. Surely, you can fit in something as important as the foundation of your life. Get it done!
