“Behind the Veil” is inspired by the political philosophy of John Rawls, in particular his thought experiment known as the veil of ignorance and the conception of justice as fairness that follows from it. While the first two songs are written from the perspective of a someone at the bottom of the social order and a privileged person respectively, this track abstracts away from both perspectives. It is about the act of stripping away identity, advantage, and personal history in order to deliberate about justice from a position of radical uncertainty.
Lyrics for "Behind the Veil"
INTRO
I leave behind where I came from.
Names fall off me like ash.
In the circle of unknowing
I become no one at last.
VERSE 1
I stand without a birthplace:
No blood to tie me down,
No fortune in my pocket,
No claim to throne or crown.
All shadows stripped behind me,
All ties to pride undone.
I walk into the silence
Where all are anyone.
PRE-CHORUS
Erase the mark, erase the claim.
Erase the guilt, erase the fame.
CHORUS
Behind the veil, I breathe again.
No master's voice, no mortal chain.
What world remains when self is gone?
The law we choose must serve everyone.
Behind the veil.
Behind the veil.
Behind the veil.
VERSE 2
No edge to carve advantage.
No eye to see the weak.
I hold no fate in privilege,
No power left to keep.
I feel the weight of futures,
The risk of who I'll be:
A beggar or a ruler,
The balance makes us free.
PRE-CHORUS
Erase the mark, erase the claim.
What justice stands when none remain?
CHORUS
Behind the veil, I breathe again.
No master's voice, no mortal chain.
What law survives when lies are gone?
The rule we choose must shield everyone.
Behind the veil.
Behind the veil.
Behind the veil.
BRIDGE
Maybe I'll be the poorest child.
Maybe I'll fall and break.
Maybe I'll rise with nothing left.
What world would I create?
When you might be anyone
You must build for everyone.
CHORUS
Behind the veil, I breathe again.
No master's voice, no mortal chain.
A just design, when self is none.
The laws we make must save everyone.
OUTRO
Behind the veil
We are anyone,
We are everyone.

If you are interested in John Rawls' political philosophy, you can start with this entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/ra...
However, as every good student knows, the best way to study anything seriously is to go straight to the primary sources. In this case, it would be Rawls' "A Theory of Justice": https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978...
Rawls' project is not utopian in the naïve sense. It does not assume perfect people or perfect outcomes. Instead, it asks what principles rational agents would choose to govern a society if they were forced to deliberate without knowing their own position within it, without knowledge of their class, talents, wealth, health, or social standing. The aim is not a utopian perfect society, but fairness under uncertainty.
