Every year, our family & friends gather together for the preparation of the Vellai Kavadi to fulfill our vows during the Thaipusam Festival in Penang. Started by N.Suppiah, the preparation process of the Vellai Kavadi is very special for us. Initially, N.Suppiah used to decorate his kavadi by himself. Soon, his immediate family members, his wife S.Meenachi, her siblings & their family members began to join. As their family grow, their childrens was also part of the process. Taking about two to three weeks & at times almost a month, this process is very eagerly awaited. Now, lots of grandchildrens, great grandchildrens & many family friends are part of this wonderful days preparation. During this time, all the kavadi bearers will prepare themselves for the "BIG DAY' with daily prayers. They become vegetarians during this time & will undergo fasting in order to purify their bodies. All family members & friends who join the preparation process will also be vegetarians as most of them have their own vows to fulfill. We also learn many things about Lord Murugan as many of his stories are shared. Origins of Vellai Kavadi, previous years experiences, stories & videos are shared as well. On the background, many of our favourite Murugan songs will be played. Once back home, the songs will be echoing in our ears. Amazing feelings & when the "BIG DAY" -Thaipusam arrives, its a big family gathering as many of our relatives & friends will join together with us throughout our journey from Lorong Kulit to Waterfall where we get the blessings from the Almighty Thannermalai Balathandayuthapani Murugan. There is so much of happiness when we reach top of the Hilltop Temple at Waterfall to get "HIS" blessing & we simply break into tears at times showing our feeling of gratitude to "HIM" for being with us throughout this journey. Once back, a small prayers is done two days after Thaipusam, during which we conclude the prayers process & break the vegetarian period. Awaiting the next year, this year's process will come to a close & join the list of all the previous years as we will be prepared to do all the things again the next year & the following year & all the coming years.
