Kochi is known as the Queen of Arabian Sea and is famous for its backwaters and the Chinese fishing nets, which is known as Cheenavala in Malayalam language. The Chinese fishing nets in Kochi are pretty much an icon of Kerala and, a favourite tourist attraction. It is one of the most photographed sights in Kochi. The centuries-old fishing nets have become synonymous with Kochi’s global image. On the Chinese Fishing nets, heavy stones, are tied to the ropes of different lengths, to maintain the balance. The nets are suspended from a large beam which is supported by poles, and are lowered into the water by means of a pulley system. The fishing net goes down up to 30 to 40 feet deep into the water. The net is allowed to remain underwater for about 4 to 5 minutes before it is raised back by tugging the ropes, and fishes are caught in the net. When the net is raised, the rocks come to rest on a platform one-by-one, thereby keeping everything in balance. In the past, these fishing nets were operated by hand. This is very time consuming and tiring work. Nowadays, they are run by electric or diesel motors.
