For over seven decades, Kashmir has been a land trapped in barbed wires, curfews, and unending conflict. Behind the scenic beauty of its mountains lies one of the longest unresolved disputes in modern history , a people denied their promised right to self-determination.

In 1947, the partition of British India left Kashmir in turmoil. Despite its Muslim-majority population, the region’s future was left undecided. In 1948, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 47, promising Kashmiris a free and fair plebiscite to decide their destiny. More than 75 years later, that promise remains unfulfilled.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars over Kashmir (1947–48, 1965, 1999). Since then, heavy militarization has turned the valley into one of the most militarized zones in the world, with over 700,000 armed personnel stationed there. Countless human rights reports have documented enforced disappearances, mass graves, pellet gun injuries, and arbitrary detentions, leaving generations traumatized.

On August 5, 2019, India revoked Article 370 of its constitution, stripping Jammu & Kashmir of its limited autonomy. This move was followed by a complete communications blackout, mass arrests, and months of curfew, cutting off millions from the outside world. For many, it was not just a political betrayal but a humanitarian catastrophe.

Despite decades of suppression, Kashmir’s call for freedom refuses to fade. International human rights organizations continue to demand transparency, justice for the victims of state violence, and the restoration of fundamental rights.

Kashmir is not just a piece of land it is a story of people who dream of living without fear, of children who deserve classrooms instead of bunkers, of mothers who deserve to see their sons return home alive.

The world cannot turn away forever. It is time to end the silence, uphold promises made, and let the people of Kashmir decide their own fate.
