Rep. Kevin Kiley (R–California) is urging voters to reject Proposition 50, a redistricting measure he says represents one of the worst cases of gerrymandering in decades. Citing an “F” grade from the Princeton Gerrymandering Project, Kiley calls the proposed “elephant district” map unfair and damaging to democracy. He criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom for defending partisan maps in response to Republican states and warned against a national “race to the bottom.” Kiley supports a bipartisan congressional commission to eliminate gerrymandering nationwide by the next census.
